The MAINT dialog uses the LISTDSI TSO command to get UNIT, VOLSER, and SMS attributes of the CFX file. The temporary data set allocate is attempted using these attributes. Therefore the temporary PDS should have the same SMS characteristics as the CFX file.

SMS can specify that the data set can go on multiple volumes. But a PDS is not permitted to span volumes.
